Anatomy of a documentary pitch deck
A pitch deck is the short visual document a filmmaker sends to funders, broadcasters and partners. It answers one question: why this film, by this team, now?
Typical sections
- Logline — one or two sentences that capture the story.
- Synopsis — the narrative arc in half a page.
- Characters — who we follow and what is at stake for them.
- Access — proof that the team can actually film the story.
- Visual approach — style, reference stills, camera plan.
- Impact — what change the film hopes to support.
- Team — relevant credits.
- Budget and status — what has been shot, what is needed.
- Distribution plan — festivals, broadcasters, educational market.
Common mistakes
Too many pages, no clear protagonist, and a budget that doesn't match the ambition. Funders read dozens of decks a week; twelve to fifteen clear slides beat forty dense ones.
