Big wave safety
A big wave wipeout can hold a surfer underwater for two waves or more. Modern big wave surfing is built around a safety culture that did not exist a generation ago.
Inflatable vests
Since the early 2010s most big wave surfers wear flotation vests with CO2 cartridges. Pulling a cord inflates the vest and helps bring the surfer to the surface faster.
Jet-ski rescue
Teams of drivers and rescuers on personal watercraft sit in the channel. After a wipeout they race in between sets, pick the surfer onto a rescue sled and drive out of the impact zone.
Breath-hold and fitness training
Surfers train static and dynamic apnea under supervision, practise underwater running with weights, and work on heart-rate control. They never train breath-holds alone.
A safety plan
- Know the break, the channel and the currents.
- Agree hand signals with the rescue team.
- Check vest cartridges and leashes before each session.
- Have medical support and oxygen on shore for major swells.
