From festivals to distribution
Finishing a film is only half the journey. The festival circuit decides how many people will ever see it.
Premiere strategy
Major festivals often require a world or national premiere. Filmmakers choose carefully: a big festival brings press and buyers, a specialised sports or ocean festival brings the core audience.
After the premiere
- Sales agents represent the film to buyers worldwide.
- Broadcasters and streamers license the film for a territory and period.
- Educational distribution sells screening rights to schools and libraries.
- Impact screenings with sports clubs, NGOs and community groups.
How long does it take?
Typically one to two years from premiere to wide availability. Some independent films never get a streaming deal and live on through community screenings — which can be just as meaningful.
